Central Honshu (the main island of Japan) is a truly fascinating area, containing the Japanese Alps, a must-see destination both for ski enthusiasts, but also for self-indulgent onsen retreats with fabulous food, relaxing hot springs (even the monkeys get to enjoy them at Jigokudani) , traditional ryokans and of course, the fascinating architecture including Shirakawa UNESCO village, Matsumoto Castle (still the original timber structure), Takayama old town, as well as some fairly impressive modern stuff in Matsumoto.
