Although there is plenty to see and do both in Cromford itself and at Arkwright's Mill, it is well worth taking a walk along the canal from, say, Ambergate.  You can easily get the train there and then back from Cromford if you are staying in Derby.  That said, if you are lucky enough to arrive in the middle of a beer festival, music festival, vintage car festival or any of the events put on by the Victorian Society, you may not want to venture beyond the mill.

In addition to beautiful woodland, wildlife and flowers, there are also a few interesting historic sights such as the pumping station at Leawood, especially worth a visit when it is operating and demonstrating the power of steam.
