The main
airport in the Lofoten area is at Evenes, although often (confusingly or
helpfully) referred to as Harstad/Narvik; it comprises a nissen hut and a
bus stop, so not a major destination in its own right. However, do not
be put off! When you arrive, the car rental desks will be open at
23:00 (if you have booked) and the airport buses to Narvik and Harstad
rather quaintly wait until all the passengers have got off the plane and got
themselves organised even if, as in my case, the flight arrived about an
hour late! It was only on my last day that I
got round to visiting the rather charming village itself as well as the
dramatically positioned sculpture, strategically right on top of an old
German WWII gun emplacement. The locals seem somewhat blasé about
their sculptural heritage and, almost oblivious to Art in their midst,
simply questioned me as to why I was there without my fishing gear! |
