| In the early 17th century, Langenes
had been an important (by Norwegian standards) centre for fishing and
trade, but various events, including an arbitrary division of the
administrative area of Langenes, led to a continuous population decline
until the 19th century when the increasingly large boats found better
conditions in nearby harbours such as Stø and dealt the final blow to
the community. Now effectively an outdoor museum, it will feature
in the "environmental disasters" theme as an example of how politicians
as well as changing markets, can destroy a viable economy for their own
self-interest. Still, very pretty church in a beautiful setting. |
